SURROUND

The same as stereo, the term of “surround” comprises a spatial aspect and does not exclude height. However, in practice it is used for a multi-channel audio playback with the speakers placed on a single level around the listener (360°).

At the same time, this level only represents 2 spatial dimensions, the x and the y-axes. For an optimum playback, listening at the “sweet spot” is recommended.

This system goes back to Walt Disney who, in 1940, firstly coined the expression of Fantasound when he transformed the sound of his film Fantasia into the first commercial multi-channel film ever.

This led to the development of today’s surround sound systems (our symbolic attribution: silver).
